With the Zimbabwe election scheduled for July, sources indicate that the government has restricted freedom of association and movement in an attempt to deprive the opposition of the opportunity to link with the public.
In January, an opposition figure, Misheck Nyembe reported that soon after entering a meeting of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) in Budiriro, he saw 20 baton-wielding anti-riot officers pressing close together with 3 heavily armored police trucks.
The scene was shortly filled with tear gas as the police disrupted them.
There has been a string of arrests triggered by President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s regime which has since come under heavy censure.
As of January, more than 100 opposition leaders have been arrested and held in detention without trial.
