Tea companies in Nandi have agreed to surrender 1000 acres of land to the county government for the construction of an industrial park in exchange for an automated tea harvesting machine.
The controversial tea-harvesting machine has left 60,000 workers jobless, with the multinational companies attempting to reduce operational costs.
“Eastern Produce Company of Kenya, Nandi Tea, and George Williamson are some of the tea companies that have agreed to surrender a total of 1,000 acres of land to enable the county government put up the industrial park,” Agriculture executive Kiplimo Lagat said.
Dr. Lagat stated that the county will accommodate those who have lost jobs into new positions once they’ve completed the industrial park construction.
