160,000 Zimbabwean workers in South Africa are facing deportation ahead of the June 2023 expiration of their work permits, which comes after the government affirmed that they will be no extension.
“Everything is unclear and we don’t know what to do, my children know nothing about Zimbabwe. It will be difficult to leave,” Said Matilda Tebogo, a 35-year-old shopkeeper.
Matilda is one of the thousands of beneficiaries of the Zimbabwean Extension Permit (ZEP).
In 2008, thousands of Zimbabweans migrated to South Africa seeking employment following an economic crisis in their country.
