The Gabon National Assembly and Senate want to reduce the Presidential term limit to five years from the current seven years, only five months to the General Election.
The proposed constitutional amendment also reduces the presidential election to one round.
The Presidential election will commence at the end of August, even though the specific date is yet to be announced.
A faction of the opposition has denounced the move to amend the Presidential term, saying it is aimed at increasing the presidential stint of Ali Bongo Ondimba, the country’s third President.
Ali Bongo has been in power since 2009, continuing his father’s rulership of 41 years.
